The school year is in its last days….June 20, 2017

The school year is in in last days and all learning material has been put away. It is now up to the teachers to come up with activities to occupy the children. Today we went to see a play that starts out with a little girl saying, ” I am going to tell you a story. We are in Florida.” Why she has to tell us it is Florida I do not know. Nothing in the rest of the story refers to Florida or anything about Florida. This is my first grade class with Maria Jose. Maria insisted that they must have inherited my bad eyesight. I made the...

Dispatch from across the Pond – May 12, 2017

Since my last Dispatch I have traveled to Belgium where I visited Brussells, Bruge, and Antwerp. Brussells is a very multicultural city with a very diverse population. I stayed in a Muslim part of the city. On my daily walk to the city center (thirty minutes) I was able to see, smell, and taste some wonderful foods; pastries, breads, sausages, and exotic fruits and vegetables. Bruge has preserved its medieval charm and it is a delight to ride your bike through the town and enjoy the architecture, canals, restaurants, and shops. It is a...

The holidays are well past and February is almost over.

The holidays are well past and February is almost over. I was able to visit Toledo which used to be the center of the Spanish Empire and the center of the Catholic Church in Spain. It is only a short train ride from Madrid. The Cathedral by itself is well worth the trip. I spent a whole day just in the Cathedral. It is very clear why the Catholic Church left such a footprint in Spain and Europe. Who cannot be awed by the richness and splendor of the church itself. The people in Toledo are very proud of El Greco and you can visit the house...

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to Everyone!

Posted by on January 17, 2017 in Jose Colchado, What's New | Comments Off on Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to Everyone!

The first trimester ended December 25 at the school. There was a dinner for all faculty and staff with a cake for a gift from the principal. We had until January 9th off. The great Christmas adventure began immediately on the 23rd. I went to Madrid to meet Freddy, my sister Annie’s son, who came to spend the holidays with me and to see some of Europe. We spent the night in Madrid so that he could see the sights there and the Christmas lights. They go all out with Christmas decorations throughout the city. There are special bus tours to...

November has come and gone and I am still in Spain

November has come and gone and I am still in Spain. Haven’t been doing any painting but have been enjoying taking photos in black and white and playing around with color, shadows and saturation. The B&W seems particularly suited to some of the old buildings. Visited Lisbon and stayed in a one room private rental. Only the best for Jose. Actually I would rather spend my money on local food and sightseeing. Had roasted sardines, pan de abuela, custard tarts, roast pig, lots of different kinds of sausages and more sweets than I ought...

I have been at the school for one month and things are going well.

I have been at the school for one month and things are going well. Halloween was a big deal at the school and throughout Spain as well. The Chinese are raking in the dough! I had a four day weekend because I am off on Monday and today is a holiday. So I decided to go to Seville about 530 kilometers from Madrid. By fast train it was 2 1/2 hours in a very comfortable 2nd class seat. Seville is smaller than Madrid and has a small city feel to it. It is easy to walk to almost everything you want to see. Among the pictures you will receive in this...

I am into my second week at school and it is wearing me out.

Posted by on October 14, 2016 in Jose Colchado | Comments Off on I am into my second week at school and it is wearing me out.

Hello Friends and Fellow Artists I am into my second week at school and it is wearing me out. I change classes every 45 minutes and have to adapt to the new students and teacher every time. The kids are like everywhere else, they are great. I am surprised and somewhat dismayed at what I perceive as teaching to the test ruling instruction. They are always working from workbooks that are part of a British instructional program. It does not allow for individual differences in the students and if they miss one question the program moves on...

Dispatch from Across the Pond

Friends, This is the Atocha Central Train, Bus and Metro center in Madrid. From here you can get anywhere, if you can figure out how to get there. I think I managed to find the ONLY toilet in the whole Metro Train system. And it costs you 60 centavos to get in. I think I’ll wait. The whole euro system is deceptive. You pay one euro for a cup of coffee and you think you are paying one dollar but you are actually paying about $1. 15 cents. This adds up. I did however get one great deal. Because I am a senior citizen ( de la Tercer Edad) I...

Dear friends, fellow artists and companions on the road to personal growth and happiness. You have made my time at the Center a wonderful, fulfilling and growing experience for me. Your support of my classes has given me the means to continue growing as a teacher, artist and human being. Thank you! My send off and reception were too generous and gracious about my role at the Center. The songs were touching and I will always cherish the thoughts conveyed by the songs and all of you. I expect to send occasional dispatches from across the...
